My Favorite Things #1

Ok, so I’m not Oprah. But I do have a list of my favorite things too :-)

Apple Ipad
I am always skeptical when a new piece of technology comes on the market. I don’t want to be the one that pays to test the new device just so that it can be improved for others who would pay the same price for improvements in the technology. But in the case of the new IPAD, I just couldn’t resist!  I opted to purchase the 16GB with Wi-fi + 3G. This means that not only can I utilize free wi-fi when I come across it, but I also have the option to purchase an internet service through AT&T so that I can be assured to have Internet service even when wi-fi is not available. So far I have had great success with this device and have had very little “down time” when it comes to internet connection. I also purchased the optional keyboard dock which allows me the full size keyboard that you can dock your ipad in to recharge and the car adapter

This thing is awesome! And thanks to my tech savvy kids, I’ve been introduced to numerous “apps” that I really enjoy.

  • Pandora – it allows me to listen to music just like a radio through the internet. (My husband plugs it up to some computer speakers in the garage when he’s lifting weights.)
  • Paypal – I do a lot of business through Paypal. The app “pushes” notifications to me that I have received money.
  • Facebook – a great way to update my status or see what others are up to at a glance.
  • Maps – this is included when you get the ipad and I love it! I’ve used it as a GPS on more than one occasion.
  • Gmail – a quick way to access my email account
  • Netflix – works with your existing account so you can watch movies (airplane, hospital waiting area, on road trips)
  • And lots more!

I’m very curious about some of the other accessories that you can buy – like the camera adapter. You can even purchase a service to allow you to use the ipad like a telephone!

Party Planner

Wine & Cheese partyI love getting inspiration from Pottery Barn! In addition to all the neat furniture they carry, they have great ideas for entertaining. I’ve often found inspiration from others by visiting stock photography sites like Dreamstime.com. Simply by doing a search for wedding tables, you can find beautiful shots of tabletop designs. At Pottery Barn, I love the Party Planner section. Yes, they are promoting their own products, but they show you how beautiful they can look (as well as functional) by showing you pictures of design scapes they have set up.

Check out this one for a wine and cheese party.

Holiday Inn – Ocean City Md

Holiday Inn 17th St. Ocean City Maryland

Poolside Holiday Inn Ocean City Maryland

One of our favorite places to stay. We have stayed a different times of the year. Certainly the off season is the best – it’s cheaper! It’s right on the boardwalk at 17th street and the distance from the boardwalk to the ocean is not that far. (Versus when you stay at the beginning of the boardwalk near the inlet – its quite a hike to actually reach the ocean from the boardwalk.)

During the summer months, rooms can get pretty pricey (upwards of $450 a night). But during the off-season I’ve gotten them for about $84 a night. The suites are very spacious. You get a large bedroom with choice of King or two Queens (sorry – a double is just too small!), a galley kitchen and then a living area that includes a chair, pull out bed (queen) sofa, another dresser with TV, and a small dining table. Some of the bathrooms have a jacuzzi size tub or 3 head shower. Some bedrooms have the jacuzzi tub.

We’ve ordered room service for breakfast several times. It’s so nice to select what you want for breakfast the night before and put the selected menu outside the hotel door with the time you want breakfast delivered in the morning. We’ve tried several of the breakfast items (my favorite is the pancakes) and they were hearty and enjoyable.

There is both an indoor pool (in the atrium next to the bar/cafe) as well as two outdoor pools. A kiddie pool with water slide on one side and another small pool on the other. In the summer months I highly recommend staking your claim to the outdoor pool area chairs (or table with umbrella and chairs) when they open in the morning (9am I think). Try coming down at 10am or later and chances are you will miss your chance to find multiple chairs grouped together that are available. They also have waitresses that will serve you beverages (adult ones too) as well as light fare from the cafe.

Within walking distance is a Dunkin Donuts (closed in the off-season), CVS, Subway sub shop, and Holy Savior Catholic Church. The boardwalk is fun to watch if you get an oceanfront room. In the morning hours you will see bikers, walkers, and joggers making their way up and down the boardwalk. The hotel is on 17th street, so if you’re looking for some exercise, make your way up to the beginning of the boardwalk. Too tired to walk back? Take the TRAM. I think the ride is $4 each way for adults. (They let my 4 year old ride back for free.)

The off-season is pretty quiet compared to the summer months, but we’ve always enjoyed our stays. Kids love to swim in the indoor pool. A walk on the boardwalk is always nice and there are lots of our favorite restaurants still open. (La Hacienda, Three Brother’s Pizza). In the winter we like to go to the Winterfest of Lights at Northside Park (125th Street & The Bay).
